Blackmagic Design has announce a range of new hardware with support for 4K video, including production switching, interfaces and recording equipment.

The company’s existing Production Studio 4K has been joined by a replacement for the ATEM 1 M/E switcher, the ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K. The updated unit has a similar design to the Production Studio 4K, with a 1U rack format, front-mounted colour monitor and active switching buttons.

On the rear, the switcher has 10 6G-SDI inputs, as well as a single HDMI input, and three 6G-SDI auxiliary outputs. Programme outputs are via two 6G-SDI connections or HDMI, and there is also an SDI and HDMI multiview. The switcher also features analogue video in and out. The ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K includes a digital video effects engine for scaling and positioning live video, for picture-in-picture effects.

At IBC 2013, Blackmagic also announced two updated solid-state video recorders, the HyperDeck Studio 2 and HyperDeck Studio Pro 2. The recorders are both 1U rack-mount models with dual drive slots.

The Studio 2 is for HD production, recording in uncompressed, ProRes and DNxHD. The HyperDeck Studio Pro 2 supports 6G-SDI and 4K recording, as well as Thunderbolt, and inputs for external timecode. The HyperDeck Studio Pro 2 as a list price of US$1,999. New software for the recorders adds additional ProRes format support — ProRes 422, ProRes 422(LT) and ProRes 422 (Proxy) – for reduced file sizes.

The 4K switchers and new recorders are backed by a monitoring system, the SmartScope Duo 4K. This combines two 8-inch LCD screens in a 3U rack chassis, with 6G-SDI support and switchable video and waveform monitoring.

Blackmagic also announced three new mini converters with 4K support: the Mini Converter Optical Fiber 4K, Mini Converter SDI to HDMI 4K and the Mini Converter SDI Multiplex 4K. Each will cost US$495.

In a firmware updated announced before IBC, Blackmagic has also added HD (1080p) support to its Production Studio 4K; 1080p support is built in to the The ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K.
